Overview
Through foundation studies in either music theatre, drama or technical theatre you will undertake practical studies in various aspects of performance or technical theatre depending on your chosen specialisation. If you are studying the music theatre specialisation, you will focus on singing, acting and dance (ballet, tap and jazz). If you are studying the drama specialisation you will focus on voice, acting and movement. If you are studying the technical theatre specialisation you will explore the technical theatre process through practical projects. You are expected to demonstrate cumulative levels of skill and knowledge through this series of units.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Practical Assessment
Music theatre specialisation
You will be required to complete a practical assessment in singing consisting of the following:
Technical exam (closed assessment within the exam period)
- Technical scales and exercises as set for Level 1, to be sung from memory.
- One vocalise from Nicola Vaccai's Vocal Exercises-Metodo pratico de canto. The vocalise must be sung in Italian from memory, with piano accompaniment.
- Advance Australia Fair, which will be sung unaccompanied, in any key, with no starting note provided. Two verses required, to be sung from memory.
Performance exam (public performance at the end of the term)
- The program should demonstrate a choice of 4 works covering the different genres available throughout the history of 20th and 21st century music theatre with a total performance time of no longer than 15 minutes.
- The program should show a variety of styles and tempos, and be sung entirely from memory.
- The program is to be chosen in consultation with your teacher to ensure an appropriate level of difficulty is attempted.
- Program notes for the recital program must be submitted at the time of the vocal exam. They should be a minimum of 200 words for each piece of music that you are performing in your recital program. You do not need to do program notes for your Technical exam.
Drama specialisation
Monologue presentation (public performance at the end of the term)
- You will be required to present 4 contrasting monologues in an end of term examination. Two monologues will be classical and/or heightened language and two will be contemporary. These monologues will be chosen in consultation with the drama lecturer.
- You will be required to present a drama performance of material chosen in consultation with the drama lecturer.
Technical Theatre specialisation
- Technical Theatre Project 1 - Practical (20%)
- subject area to be determined by the course coordinator and the technical theatre specialist staff
- Technical Theatre Project 1 - Written journal and research (10%)

Technical Theatre specialisation
- You will be required to complete a practical project with the drama students based on material worked on during class.
- Assessments will be performed in front of the class and/or at a public performance at the end of the term.

Each of the following assessment criteria are equally weighted:

- 100% attendance at all classes, tutorials and rehearsals as stated on the CQCM timetable
Students who are not able to attend any scheduled acting class, tutorial or rehearsal must present a doctor's certificate or letter from the student counsellor outlining the reasons for non-attendance.

Assessment criteria will be negotiated as appropriate for each individual project.

3 Practical Assessment
Music theatre specialisation
You will be required to complete a practical assessment in each of the three styles of dance shown here:
- ballet
- modern music theatre (jazz)
- tap
Specific choreography and routines for each of these dance styles will be taught throughout the term and assessed during the end of term examination period. This will be a closed assessment during the end of term exam period.
Drama specialisation
- Dance/movement assessment (10%) - You will be required to complete a practical assessment in dance/movement. This will be a closed assessment during the end of term exam period.
- Singing assessment (10%) - You will be required to perform two contrasting songs in a closed assessment during the end of term exam period.
- Drama journal (10%)- You will be required to complete a written journal outlining your development as an actor throughout the term. Minimum of 200 words per week.

4 Written Assessment
Professional Seminar
- All students will participate in a weekly professional seminar on a range of topics associated with theatre and performance.
- For each professional seminar you will be required to write a short reflection providing answers to the following three questions: 1. What happened in this week's professional seminar? 2. How did you contribute to this week's professional seminar? 3. What did you learn from this week's professional seminar and how will you apply this to your future learning and performance process? You will write your answers online and this is to be submitted for marking by the Friday of each week, 11.45pm.
- 100% attendance is required at all seminar sessions.
- Students who are not able to attend any scheduled Professional Seminar session must present a doctor's certificate or letter from the student counselor outlining the reasons for non-attendance.
Exam Week Friday (16 June 2017) 5:00 pm AEST
Professional Seminar process papers shall be submitted on the Friday immediately following the seminar.
