Overview
Continuing your foundational studies in either music theatre, drama or technical theatre, you will undertake practical studies in various aspects of performance or technical theatre depending on your chosen major. If you are studying the music theatre major, you will focus on acting and dance (ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz). If you are studying the drama major you will focus on voice, acting and movement. If you are studying the technical theatre major you will explore the technical theatre process through practical projects. You are expected to demonstrate cumulative levels of skill and knowledge through this series of units.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Technical Theatre Specialisation:
Assessment Part 1:
In-Class Presentation: Design Project - Plans and Model
Each week you will be learning about the different aspects and processes of design.
For this task you will:
Design the set for the prescribed script
- Draw a scale floorplan of your design using a prescribed theatre/stage space
- Create a physical or digital scale model
- Give an in-class presentation of your design using your model, plans and sketches
Submission requirements:
The floorplan and final model will be presented live in the scheduled class
Assessment Part 2:
Reflective Journal: Due Week 6 - Friday 11:45pm
Task: Each week you will be learning about the different aspects and processes of design. You are expected to keep your own reflective journal in which you write an entry each week that:
- Reflects upon tutorial content for that week and,
- Responds to the set question
Submission Requirements:
Reflective journal containing entries for each of the first 5 tutorial weeks

- Objectives: Clearly directed to the 'other' suitable to the character's tactics
- Understanding: Clear understanding of material, plot, the character's place in it, script structure, and theatrical sryle

Ensemble Assessment Criteria:

Staging In Performance - Introduction to Design: Assessment Criteria
- Ability to create a customised and visually effective staging design for an event that displays a thorough understanding and effective application of staging design qualities and techniques
- Ability to prepare, plan and produce scaled work plans of your designs
- Ability to prepare, plan and produce scaled plans and models of your design using relevant software systems or in a physical form
- Ability to work as a team. Professionalism displayed while working with other creatives in the design process
- Attendance and Professional Development: Commitment to scheduled times and self-disciplinary practice
Reflective Journal Assessment Criteria:
- Completed weekly research activities supported by self-motivated learning and theory engagement

Specific choreography and routines for each of these dance styles will be taught throughout the term and assessed during the end of term examination period. This will be a closed assessment.
Drama Specialisation:Voice & Movement Assessment
You will be required to complete a practical assessment in dance / movement / voice. This will be a closed assessment during the end of term examination period.
Singing Assessment:
- You will be required to perform two contrasting songs chosen in consultation with your unit tutor
- Memorisation of a foreign-language song. This piece will be selected by the unit coordinators and may include choreography.
Movement Assessment:
- You will be required to attend weekly in-person classes with your peers.
- You will perform a movement assessment taught in class as part of the end of term examination period.
Technical Theatre Specialisation:
Assessment Part 1:
Staging In Performance - Design Project - Costumes
Each week you will be learning about the different aspects and processes of design.
Task: In-class Presentation
You will design costumes for the prescribed script using mood boards, suitable software, sketches and prepared renderings of your costume designs.
You will give an in-class presentation of your design using your renderings, plans and sketches.
Submission requirements:
The final renderings, mood boards, plans and sketches will be presented live in the scheduled class.
Assessment Part 2:
Task: Each week you will be learning about the different aspects and processes of design. You are expected to keep your own reflective journal in which you write an entry each week that:
- Reflects upon tutorial content for that week and,
- Responds to the set question
- Hand-written, typed and printed entries of text and image will be accepted
- In-text referencing must be included using APA 7th Edition
- Reference list must be provided and include books, electronic journal articles, DVDs, as well as authored websites. Wikipedia and websites without an author will not be accepted.
Submission Requirements:
Reflective journal containing entries for each of the tutorial weeks from Week 6 through to Week 9 inclusive
