Overview
In this unit you will study the development and structure of various theatre styles from the mid nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. You will analyse important primary sources while studying the broader political, social and cultural contexts as they apply to the history of theatrical performance practice.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Presentation
- You are to find video recordings of two contrasting European cabaret songs by different writers that were written before World War II, in either the original language or an English translation. These videos may be sourced from DVDs, Youtube or any other video platform.
- Provide a critique of these video recordings regarding the authenticity of the performances with respect to the history of cabaret and political theatre between the two world wars. This can include a discussion on
- Use of the stage
- Costuming
- Type of accompaniment
- Vocal techniques employed
- Discuss the historical background to these two songs, the writers and society at the time.
Assignment format:
- This assignment is to be saved as a Word document and submitted online through the course website.
- Use 12 point Times New Roman font for the body of the essay
- 1.5 spacing throughout
- You may use sub-headings to organise your assignment. These may be in a different colour and font.
- Include in-text references (citations) throughout the assignment.
- Include a reference list at the end of the assignment in APA style, 6th Edition.
- Do not rely solely on web-based sources. On-line research sources obtained from peer reviewed journals or academic databases are acceptable. Any internet sources used must be scholarly and accredited. Citations from Wikipedia, Sparksnotes, or similar websites are not to be used under any circumstances.

2 Written Assessment
Task: Write an essay on ONE of the topics provided below:
Length: 2000 words
Topic 1: The foundations of modern scenic design
Discuss the ways that Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig sought to revolutionise the theatre from its traditional stylistic conventions of the 19th century to the new demands of the non-realistic stage during the early decades of the 20th century. Compare and contrast their theories and practices, and how they differed from established theatrical conventions. Support your argument with examples from primary sources: text and images where appropriate. All images must be correctly referenced.
Topic 2: The modern actor
Bertolt Brecht and Constantin Stanislavski both rebelled against 19th century theatrical conventions, developing new methodologies in acting, rehearsal technique, and approaches to play production. Compare and contrast their theories and practices, and how they differed from established theatrical conventions. Support your argument with examples from primary sources: text from specific plays and excerpts from the original theories where appropriate.
