Course Overview

The Master of Business Management is an innovative degree designed for those who want to become leaders and managers in different industries. The course is designed for professionals of any field to undertake study in business management.

The course is a discipline-based degree with core units covering, Applied Business Research, Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, and Business Communication. You may select a major in Marketing, International Business, Social Innovation, Public Administration, or Hospital and Health Services Management. In addition, you will have the opportunity to further tailor your course with electives, and these could include an Internship with an organisation of your choice, or a study tour overseas. You will learn to apply the skills across a range of industries, and in both corporate and not for profit organisations.

The course will enable professionals in business or other careers to attain advanced skills, knowledge and attributes required by employers in the workplace. The combination of face to face and online delivery with group discussions, and examination of workplace case studies, will enhance learning and achievement of key skills needed in professional careers. The diverse profile of students will further enable collaboration with peers beyond postgraduate study.

Career Information

The Master of Business Management provides specialist management education and training that will enable students to operate as a manager in the international and domestic business spheres. This course combines a comprehensive range of management units with opportunities to choose electives from other fields of interest.

Number of Units Required CQUniversity uses the concept of credits to express the amount of study required for a particular course and individual units. The number of units varies between courses. Units in postgraduate courses normally consist of 8 points of credit or multiples thereof (e.g. 8, 16, 24).

Entry Requirements
  • A completed 3 year bachelor degree in any discipline from an Australian university or college, or equivalent overseas qualification; or 
  • A CQUniversity Graduate Certificate in Management.

International Students or domestic students born outside of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA must meet English Language Proficiency requirements. Minimum scores required are:

  • IELTS (Academic) score of at least 6.0 (with no band score less than 5.5), or
  • TOEFL overall score of 75 with no score less than 17, or
  • Pearson Test of English Academic overall score of 54 with no score less than 46, or
  • Cambridge English Advanced overall test score of 169 (with no individual band score of less than 154).

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study.

Advanced Standing:

Advanced standing of up to 24 credit points may be granted for students who have completed a Bachelor or Honours degree in a related cognate discipline from an Australian tertiary institution or equivalent overseas qualification

Practicum/Work Placement

BUSN20020 - This is a 12 Credit Point unit. You will be placed in a company for a 10-week internship requiring 4 days per week working within the host company. You will also undertake an applied research project based on a particular issue within your host organisation. You must undertake this unit as the only unit in the final trimester of your course.

Students must complete one major and also have the option to complete an internship or elective stream in this course and should plan their enrolment according to the core requirements of their chosen stream. It is highly recommended that students consult a Course Advisor in order to plan their enrolment from the commencement of their course. Students must follow the approved planner and undertake the internship in their final term of study.

Hospital and Health Services Management Major

Number of units: 10 Total credit points: 60

Students who meet the prerequisite requirements and choose an internship stream in order to apply the knowledge and skills gained in this course to a professional workplace will undertake the unit BUSN20020 Business Internship and two appropriate elective units to complete their course of study.

Following the application and selection process, students placed with a host organisation will undertake their work placement for 10 consecutive weeks, working standard office hours for four days per week - approximately 320 hours in total. International students should check their work rights on their individual visa to ensure they remain compliant with visa conditions at all times. More information about visa conditions can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website. Please consult a Course Advisor as you will not be able to enrol in BUSN20020 yourself.

Students who choose, instead, to undertake the elective stream in order to enhance their career development through the study of a group of complementary units should enrol in other units from the list provided below. Students may choose to undertake a 12 credit point BUSN20021 Research Project as part of this stream.

Students who meet the prerequisite requirements and choose an internship stream in order to apply the knowledge and skills gained in this course to a professional workplace will undertake the unit BUSN20020 Business Internship and two appropriate elective units to complete their course of study.

Following the application and selection process, students placed with a host organisation will undertake their work placement for 10 consecutive weeks, working standard office hours for four days per week - approximately 320 hours in total.
