Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) is a pre-university preparatory course that prepares potential applicants for further study.
STEPS aims to afford adults who have turned 18 in the year of enrolment, and who are Australian or New Zealand citizens or hold permanent resident or humanitarian visas, an opportunity to study at university.
STEPS is an internal or distance course, designed to instill in its adult learners the skills and confidence necessary to embark on tertiary study.
STEPS covers academic communication, mathematics, computing, science, independent learning skills, study skills and library/information literacy skills.
The great majority of students who have completed STEPS have gained entrance to CQUniversity or other tertiary institutions, while others have moved on to more rewarding careers.
The STEPS course helps mature age students develop the skills and confidence needed to start a university degree. Most students who complete STEPS gain entry to CQUniversity or another tertiary institution.

This assessment will guide the planning of an individual course of study which will meet the minimum entry requirements for the CQUniversity undergraduate course of choice.
Part time study involves 1-2 units per term equating to 12-24 hours per week. This study mode is recommended for students who are working full time or if it has been a while since they last studied.
Full time study involves 3-4 units per term , equating to 36-48 hours per week. This study mode is not recommended for students who are working full time or are at home caring for young children.

Students are eligible to complete as many elective units as are recommended for their individual study plan, based on the applicability of the unit content to the student's undergraduate course of choice.
A limit will be placed on unit enrolment in accordance with the requirements of the undergraduate course of choice. Requests to enrol in additional units will be considered by the Head of Course, STEPS on a case-by-case basis.
Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) course equips students with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in higher education studies. It is suitable for students who wish to study at a diploma or degree level but who have not achieved the required Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) or who lack the required pre-requisite or assumed knowledge and subsequent confidence to gain entry to higher education or to or achieve academically.
Upon successful completion of STEPS, students will gain entry to CQUniversity diploma or degree courses through the standard CQUniversity direct entry process for those courses where direct entry is available. Entry to CQUniversity courses will be in accordance with specific undergraduate courses entry requirements and successful completion of units applicable to the course of choice.
Students will be advised of the appropriate study plan to facilitate the career pathway to which they aspire. Students can choose to study in full time or part time mode in Term 1, 2 or 3 of the academic calendar year, dependent on unit availability.
