ALLH11001 - Introduction to Allied Health Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to define the role of an Allied Health professional and their scope of practice within the Australian healthcare system. Additionally, this unit will provide you with foundation knowledge about the impact of living with an illness, injury or disability as it relates to physical, emotional and social functioning. You will learn about the pragmatic and emotional adaptation processes involved, and be introduced to the use of an internationally accepted health care model which facilitates participation in wider society.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students liked how the "lectorials" were arranged to consolidate learning with an activity immediately after each small video.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the format of lectorials remain consistent, with each video recording followed by an activity to consolidate learning.

Feedback
Students commented that the detailed feedback provided on written assessment tasks was constructive and could be applied to future assessment tasks.
Recommendation
It is recommended that detailed written feedback be provided on written assessments, so that students can best learn from assessment tasks.
Action Taken
Detailed written feedback was again provided on all written assessments, to ensure students learnt from this feedback. Unit evaluation data shows students were satisfied with the feedback provided in this unit.

Feedback
Students felt that there were few examples specific to psychology, compared to other allied health disciplines.
Recommendation
Although this unit is not a core unit for CC43 Psychological Science, it is recommended that more examples specific to psychology be incorporated into this unit to be as inclusive as possible in future offerings.
Action Taken
In 2023, additional examples relevant to CC43 Psychological Science were provided in recorded material and in tutorials. Further, the Head of Course for CC43 spoke to the cohort at the student information session held within tutorial time.

Students appreciated individualised email contact, and as a result, the open communication between students and unit coordinator.
Recommendation
It is recommended that this unit continue to make fortnightly contact with students to facilitate communication between students and teaching staff.

Feedback
Students appreciated the introduction to various allied health disciplines, but further exploration of other disciplines would be beneficial for interdisciplinary learning.

It is recommended that exploration of other allied health disciplines be introduced to expand student's knowledge of the allied health landscape.
