General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit develops a working understanding of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and associated legislation with a specific focus on Class 1 and 10 buildings defined in the BCA. It provides an introduction to: Statutory controls and assessment; Australian Standards and Codes; Statutory requirements and professional liability related to the building design, regulation and construction industries; and Enforcement proceedings. It will also develop an awareness of how occupational health and safety, environmental and heritage legislation interacts with Volume 2 of the BCA and will also provide an introduction to the principles of performance-based legislation.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Forum type assessments are great, as it allows us to see the standard of work other students are producing. Great for online study. This is one thing I noticed i missed when i changed from on campus study (working more closely with friends/other students) at griffith to online at cqu, but this subject makes up for that through the forum assessment. I think one of the best aspects of the course is that the lecturer encourages us students to join a group discussion in regard to a particular topic and share our factually based opinions on the subject in preparation for the forum assessment pieces.
Recommendation
Online forum assessment tasks are seen as an effective way to create a social presence and provide relevant and topical assessment task and as such will continue to be part of the assessment tasks.
