This unit comprises seven parts within three major topics covering: the development of Australia's design and construction industry; Workforce management; and Construction industry trends.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Consider the restructuring the assessment tasks.
Recommendation
Set up an updated Unit proposal to restructure the assessment tasks.
Action Taken
Introduced a new assessment structure condensing to four assessment tasks from seven assessment tasks previously.

Feedback
Students found research assessment was an excellent way to identify the current building and construction problems.
Recommendation
The same research assessment strategy, allowing students to find an industry problem to research, will be continued for the future delivery of the unit.

Feedback
The lecturer continuously encourage students to publish their research report in external sources. He also encourages students to be active researchers by enrolling into a part time or full time research program.
Recommendation
Two past students have already published two conference papers from their research reports. One past student is a PhD at the School of Engineering and Technology, CQUniversity. Another student has expressed her interest in conducting a PhD after graduation in 2022. Therefore, the same communication will be followed up with future students.

The lecturer followed continuous conversation with the students regarding how to become research active.

The unit is well structured and delivered in a great manner.
Recommendation
It is recommended to adopt the same delivery strategy. Furthermore, the unit will provide more useful learning materials in the context of high-level planning aspects of Australian building and construction industry as well as research focused.

Feedback
Students require assistance in selecting a research topic.
Recommendation
The unit requires students to choose a topic relating to the building and construction sector. So far, the unit has not been restricted to one problem area or topic but is open to problems students are passionate about solving in their current workplace or the construction industry. It is recommended to explain further selecting a research topic related to the context of the research focus.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. understand the history of the construction industry and its presnt structure
  2. understand the importance of the construction industry in relation to the Australian and the international economy
  3. understand the structure of government in Australia
  4. understand the role of government as an industry manager and legislator, client, designer, constructor and user of construction products and services
  5. understand government policies in relation to the future of the industry in science and technology; the government research structure; the role of government departments in the management of the industry
  6. understand government and commercial sector initiatives to improve industry activity and practices in Australia and offshore
  7. understand the history and classification of industry organisations, their characteristics, structures and typical aims, objectives and activities
  8. understand the principles and practices of human resource planning, staff acquisition and team building
  9. understand the history and present structure of the Australian industrial relations system, labour management practices, the enterprise bargaining system and the principles and practices of dispute and conflict resolution
  10. understand emerging trends in areas of best industry practices, including innovation, information technology, business improvement, networks and alliances, procurement, asset management, the environment, regulatory reform and intellectual improvement
