General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit covers the broad building regulatory framework, including: Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia (BCA); studies of constructional systems for conventional high rise buildings (up to thirty stories) and for "tall" (ultra high rise, (UHR)) buildings (beyond one hundred stories); the development and implementation of innovative building practices; and the diagnosis and rectification of common building faults.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
alot of researched learning is required. While this is a good thing it is very time consuming. This course requires more than the 12 hours per week indicated in the course guide. I had to take leave from work to get the assignments done. It was probably at least 20 hours study a week.
Recommendation
As the final construction course, the level and depth of research to address a task problem increases and is a necessary element towards developing the university’s graduate attribute of Lifelong Learning. Set tasks will be reviewed before the next offering.

lecturer ivan was available for questions and discussion every saturday online. This was a great chance for any questions, discussions or feedback etc. It was good to have this opportunity and be able to plan for it.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. describe the philosophy and general content of the Building Code of Australia (BCA)
  2. describe the general applications of the BCA with reference to the incorporation of Australian standards into the BCA
  3. describe the temporary works for typical high rise projects including: - general temporary works - task specific temporary works with particular reference to formwork - six (6) erection systems that have evolved from formwork systems
  4. describe the construction principles and systems covering the configuration of components, materials and details of: - footings - framing, walling and cladding - first and second fixing - services for typical high rise buildings
  5. describe the special issues encountered with very high rise buildings and other mega projects including their funding, ownership, design and construction
  6. describe the development and implementation of innovative building practices
  7. describe the diagnosis and rectification of common building faults.
