BLSV12024 - Inspection Procedures

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This is a practically based inspection procedures course to develop the students' awareness of on-site behaviour, activities and procedures associated with inspections for both the building development and regulatory control processes for all classes of buildings and defined in the Building Code of Australia. It will develop an understanding of: the role and responsibilities of the inspecting officer. Legal rights and obligations for all parties.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Overall the units seems to contain the appropriate content and students comments and scores were relatively high

Given the difference in state and territory building legislation, some amendments will be made to the learning material to improve the current content.

Feedback
Positive comments included that the lecturer is very knowledgeable, including examples of a practicing building inspector situations. The case studies used were very appropriate as these assisted in improving the students’ knowledge and identifying aspects that they would not have previously considered. Finally, a student noted that the unit was relevant to their current employment situation. Suggested improvements included that the lecturer provides recorded weekly lectures on each topic as some of the pre-recorded lectures were recorded a few years ago. The lecturer should have used Moodle news forum and Q&A forum more often. One student noted that this unit had some items previously covered in other units

Some improvement to current content, with weekly lectures being recorded, together with the use of the Moodle news and Q&A.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Formulate methodologies for carrying out building inspections of residential buildings, medium size developments and major developments.
  2. Assess the safety of temporary structures.
  3. Describe the different roles of building surveyors and discuss liability issues.
  4. Solve routine and unfamiliar problems using information, technology, logic and ethical decision making.
  5. Practice personal and interpersonal skills.
  6. Use effectively a range of appropriate communication modes.
