BMSC12006 - Cardiorespiratory Physiology & Measurement

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to discuss at an advanced level the structure and function of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and relate physiological function to the most common clinical tests of cardiorespiratory physiology at rest and during exercise; spirometry, electrocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Skill development in spirometer and ECG calibration and best practice measurement will occur through practical exercises. Students will learn to interpret spirometric, ECG and CPET results by distinguishing normal from abnormal features. Distance education (FLEX) students will be required to have access to a computer to make frequent use of internet resources and to attend a residential school on Rockhampton campus to promote development of course learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Recommendation
The structure of this unit will be maintained for future offerings. All content is covered in weeks 1-8, allowing students to complete all theory before attending the residential school in weeks 9 and 10.

Feedback
Provision of exemplars for the written assessment
Recommendation
Exemplars of the assessment task will be provided to advise students on the depth of content required as per the marking rubric.
Action Taken
Permissions were not granted from previous students to use assessments as exemplars. In light of this, the assessment and expectations were discussed during tutorials to ensure that students had a clear understanding of the depth required.

Students felt that the quality of the sound on some lecture recordings needed improvement.
Recommendation
Sound issues within huddles spaces will be discussed with the Learning and Teaching team and efforts made to improve the quality of the recordings.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge about structure to explain function in the cardiorespiratory system at rest and during exercise
  2. Explain the physiological processes underlying cardiac contraction and blood circulation
  3. Explain the physiological processes underlying pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange and gas transport
  4. Discuss homeostatic control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
  5. Describe the physiological basis of commonly utilised non-invasive clinical tests of cardiovascular and respiratory system function
  6. Perform, according to best practice guidelines, spirometry, 12 lead electrocardiographic (ECG) and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
  7. Justify your analysis of spirometry, ECG and CPET clinical test results as normal and abnormal
  8. Recognise the effects of the major medication groups on cardiovascular and respiratory system function
