BMSC13004 - Advanced Histopathology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On completion of this course, students should be able to review the characteristic features of histopathology as they apply to each human organ system including diagnosis and staging of tumours and the immune response. Identification of appropriate special staining procedures for specific tissue types and microorganisms will be developed through practical exercises and case studies. Students will report on new developments in immunohistochemistry and fluorescence imaging. Distance education (FLEX) students will be required to have access to a computer to make frequent use of internet resources and to attend a residential school on Rockhampton campus to promote development of course learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Review features of cytopathology and histopathology.
  2. Identify histopathologic specimens related to each of the body systems.
  3. Appraise the process of neoplasia, grading systems for staging malignant neoplasms and correlation with gene expression.
  4. Identify features of inflammatory disease processes and the range of tissue responses.
  5. Explain the mechanisms behind common special stain procedures used for the diagnosis of disease including bacterial, fungal, parasitic, inclusion bodies, connective tissue disease.
  6. Assess the principles and requirements of use for specialised fixation techniques, including Bouins and 95% ethanol.
  7. Distinguish artefactual morphology and/or cytology related to autolysis, mechanical/chemical damage that occurs in sample preparation, collection from pathology.
  8. Evaluate the application of new molecular and hybridisation techniques in histology.
