BUSN20019 - Professional Project

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This is a capstone unit that draws upon your area of specialisation and your wider knowledge of business environments both globally and locally. This unit facilitates students to demonstrate the synthesis of knowledge, business research methodologies and professional skills acquired throughout your Master course of study. You will work under the guidance of a supervisor to plan, carry out, and report on an original research project that addresses a significant issue in business relevant to your area of specialisation. It is also expected that students and supervisors will publish the work in an appropriate journal or forum provided ethical clearance has been adequately sought where necessary. This unit builds on your previous work in the unit Research in Business.

Pre-requisite: BUSN20016 Research in Business.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 1 - 2020 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.5 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 23.74% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students are pleased with the way in which the teaching team works together to address their concerns. They are particularly pleased with the assistance which they receive from the Unit Coordinator to ensure specific and formative feedback on assessments.
Recommendation
The Unit Coordinator will continue to offer zoom and drop in sessions for students on a weekly basis. The teaching team will continue to provide formative and summative assessment feedback and work together to address matters (particularly assessment matters) raised by students.
Action Taken
In T1 2020, three 1-hour drop-in sessions were offered each week (at different times) and additional weekend drop-ins were offered in assignment weeks. This is being carried on into T2 2020.

Students need to identify a suitable project early in the term and then work on their project continuously throughout the term.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. develop and conduct a carefully planned research project and manage any practical problems in its implementation;
  2. critically evaluate published academic research, identify secondary data sources, and review extant literature, to develop a theoretical framework for a business problem or opportunity;
  3. critically analyse the findings of the research project in the context of the defining objectives, with due recognition of inherent limitations;
  4. prepare in conjunction with your supervisor, a paper based on the research that is suitable for publication; and
  5. communicate the findings and results from the research project.
