CHIR20005 - Diagnostic Imaging

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will enable students to identify, interpret and understand skeletal change as represented on conventional radiographs as well as provide an introduction to advanced imaging. These differential diagnostic skills are fundamental for diagnostic competence in chiropractic practice.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2020 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.6 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 29.55% response rate.

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Some students would have preferred for the weekly content to be uploaded earlier.
Recommendation
It is recommended that unit material be made available on Moodle a minimum of two weeks in advance.
Action Taken
The unit material was uploaded in advance of the term starting. This appears to have been resolved as there were no comments related to this in the feedback.

Feedback
Some students felt that they would have benefited from a stronger understanding of normal radiographic anatomy before being introduced to more advanced radiological pathologies.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator should investigate the opportunity to include more normal radiographic anatomy in the early weeks of the unit.
Action Taken
The unit coordinator addressed the concerns around limited normal radiographic anatomy knowledge. The student feedback stated this addition was very useful.

Students indicated that some of the learning resources could be more engaging.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator will explore ways to increase the way in which students can engage with the content.

This appears to have been resolved as the feedback indicated that the unit coordinator created an engaging and authentic learning environment.

The unit coordinator should continue to share authentic case studies that reinforce the relevance of radiology in chiropractic practice.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate radiographs for signs of diseases.
  2. Compare normal and abnormal radiographic findings.
  3. Implement a search strategy to locate and describe disease processes.
  4. Select the appropriate management for a variety of abnormalities.
  5. Create a differential diagnosis list in order to arrive at a provisional diagnosis based on radiographic and clinical findings.

The Learning Outcomes are in the context of the AQF and specifically address Units 6, 7, 8, 9, of the CCEA Competencies, in particular elements 6.1, 6.2, 6.5, 6.6, 7.2, 9.2, 9.3 with an emphasis on elements 6.4, 7.1, 8.3, and 9.10.
