CHIR20012 - Advanced Clinical Development 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit adds to the student’s research experience by requiring the application of advanced knowledge and cognitive skills within a nominated environment of specialised clinical practice. The student is required to implement and manage the relevant clinical research plan developed in Advanced Clinical Development 1 then finalise and present it in Advanced Clinical Development 3.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students on COVID-19 impacted campuses were disappointed that the practical components could not be delivered earlier.
Recommendation
It is recommended that practical components continue to be offered and provided as part of this unit. The content was delivered once the Government restrictions were lifted.
Action Taken
The practical component was organized and delivered at the Brisbane campus and streamed live to Mackay campus students.

Feedback
Some students would have preferred to have their written assessments marks back before going into the end of term test.
Recommendation
In future offerings, it is recommended that written assessments be scheduled (and due) a few weeks earlier than present, so marks can be returned to students prior to the final tests.

Marked assessments were returned prior to the final test.

Some students felt that they would have benefited from a more clinical focus to the unit with less research.
Recommendation
It is recommended that research related to this unit is integrated further into management and care planning, therefore providing greater clinical relevance.
Action Taken
The 4 hour practical was organized so the students had adequate time to practice and apply research elements introduced throughout the unit lectures during their management and care planning.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the application of advanced knowledge and expert cognitive and technical skills in a specialised body of clinical knowledge.
  2. Design, implement and manage a research project on the body of specialised clinical practice using cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories.
  3. Apply your communication and technical research skills to design, evalaute, implement, analyse and theorise about developments in a specialised body of clinical knowledge.
  4. Satisfy the requirements of an evolving chiropractor in terms of advanced skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility as a practitioner in this specialised clinical field.

This is a specific exposure unit to assist the student develop their individualised pathway towards strengthening the majority of elements and performance indicators of CCEA’s Accreditation Standards: Unit 6 Patient Assessment, Unit 7 Diagnostic Decision Making, Unit 8 Planning of Patient Care, Unit 9 Implementation of Care, and Unit 3 Professional Interaction. There will be some elements addressed from Unit 10 Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and Unit 11 Professional Scientific Development. It is designed to provide an immersive learning experience.
