CHIR20013 - Clinical Practice 6

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Clinical Placement 6 provides students with their sixth block of practical experience with a chiropractic clinic. Students will work independently and will be expected to perform as a functional team member under minimal guidance of the clinic supervisors. Students will build on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills learnt in the previous five clinical units of the course and will therefore be expected to demonstrate this increased knowledge and skill by contributing to patient assessment and treatment. Students will be expected to actively contribute to clinical decision making and treatment and to be able to undertake many tasks independently. Students will need to operate at the level of intern with little or no supervision.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Some students would have appreciated an increased opportunity for clinical case discussions.
Recommendation
It is recommended that there is increased opportunity for clinical case discussion, interdisciplinary discussions, and peer-peer learning.
Action Taken
Clinical case discussion, interdisciplinary discussions, and peer-peer learning were increased throughout the unit.

Feedback
Some students would have appreciated a different mode of examination for the second day of the clinical exit examination.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the discipline explore changing the second day of the clinic exit examination to a written assessment.
Action Taken
The second day of the clinic exit examination was changed to a written assessment, which made better use of staff resources, and was received well by students.

Students would like more opportunities for discussion around registration and legislation requirements for soon to be registered practitioners.
Recommendation
It is recommended that opportunities be provided for discussion around registration and legislation requirements for soon to be registered practitioners, with representatives from the Chiropractic Board of Australia and the professional associations.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Perform an appropriate patient-centered clinical assessment, at a mastery level within a controlled clinical environment, under minimal supervision.
  2. Synthesize clinical data to generate differential diagnoses for a specific patient complaints, select an appropriate working diagnosis and then generate an appropriate treatment plan.
  3. Identify the need for a patient to receive emergency care and or referral to another health care professional, and to complete the appropriate course of care, under minimal supervision and feedback.
  4. Apply health prevention and promotion principles to an individual patient’s management plan, under minimal supervision and feedback.
  5. Have high level communication skills, including communicating a diagnosis and treatment plan to a patient, and producing written professional reports, under minimal clinical supervision.
  6. Behave in a way that is congruent with the duty of care of a primary contact health care practitioner and the elements of the chiropractic code of conduct, without the need for supervision.

Even though this unit goes beyond the CCEA's minimum standards, the Learning Outcomes address the majority of elements and performance indicators of those Accreditation Standards: Unit 3 Professional Interaction, Unit 6 Patient Assessment, Unit 7 Diagnostic Decision Making, Unit 8 Planning of Patient Care, and Unit 9 Implementation of Care. There will be some elements addressed from Unit 10 Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and Unit 11 Professional Scientific Development.
