COIT11134 - Object Oriented Programming

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course is designed to extend the students’ understanding of object-oriented programming principles. Knowledge of programming fundamentals, classes and objects, interfaces and polymorphism, inheritance, GUI design, arrays and lists, sorting and searching algorithms are covered. The strength and weaknesses of the techniques are also considered. Students will apply this knowledge in solving practical problems.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Using an advanced IDE and develop programs with Graphical User Interfaces.
Recommendation
Student feedback was positive regarding the use of a more advanced IDE this term. Continue to recommend its use in future terms.

Netbeans IDE version 8.2 was used, also version 11 was demonstrated and recommended.

Feedback
The current Textbook needs review and replacement due to lack of exercises. Source code within textbook is difficult to read without appropriate visual (colour) mark-up.
Recommendation
A new textbook should be sourced with more useful exercises to work through. Code examples in this new textbook should be visually attractive and easy to understand.

A new textbook is not recommended as there is consensus to remove the requirements of the textbook and provide students with a range of free resources that support their learning.

The lecture material needs review due to the lack of detail in some weeks lectures.
Recommendation
The current set of lecture slides are very brief and need a proper review.

Updating the lecture slides and tutorials have been postponed until a decision is made regarding the removal of the requirements of the textbook.

Recommendation
The assessment structure should be changed to increase the number of take-home assessments and to better reflect the effort required to complete the assessment.

Recommendation
Review the prerequisite programming unit and provide links to review materials to increase incoming students' knowledge, skills and confidence to complete this unit.

The current textbook is more suitable for professional programmers who want to learn Java. The current textbook lacks appropriate exercises. The source code provided is difficult to read without an appropriate visual (colour) mark-up.

Remove the requirements of the textbook and provide students with a range of free resources that support their learning.

Assessment feedback was insufficient or unclear
Recommendation
The assessment rubric and feedback format should be updated to make it easier to provide detailed feedback. Also, assessment answers should be discussed in tutorials after the return of assessment.
