COIT11237 - Database Design & Implementation

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Relational databases are pervasive in the current society of information technology; designing and building these databases is a challenging and rewarding occupation. This course introduces the student to data modelling, relational database theory and normalisation - essential skills for the design and implementation of relational databases. The problems associated with poorly designed and implemented databases are demonstrated. The important database language SQL is covered in sufficient depth to allow the student to appreciate its potential and limitations. Other topics covered in this course include multi-user database processing and other front-end applications. During the course, the student will design and implement a small database application. The course aims to give the student the solid theoretical foundation so essential for working in the field of database design, while also providing an opportunity to apply the theory through the assignment work. **STUDENTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN OR WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED COIT12167 DATABASE USE AND DESIGN CANNOT ENROL IN THIS COURSE.**

Note:- Students who are currently enrolled in or who have previously completed COIT12167 Database Use and Design cannot enrol in this course.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Perhaps the use of MS Visio to make E-R diagram should be revised, as it can be quite a pain to use.
Recommendation
Provide a clear instruction manual or booklet to demonstrate how to use MS Visio in the future offering.
Action Taken
Guidelines for using MS Visio are being developed and will be available to the students from Term 1, 2024. Meanwhile, students were encouraged to use the user-friendly free version software - draw.io for drawing Entity Relationship diagram in the tutorials.

Recommendation
In the future, we should develop a large test bank covering every aspect of fundamental database knowledge and skills for use in the final assessment item, the quiz.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate database applications, systems, and their role in supporting business processes.

  3. Design models using a specified data modelling approach.
  4. Create Relational Models
  5. Normalise tables using concepts relating to functional dependancy.
  6. Identify database implementation issues.

The aims of this course are to provide the student with an understanding of database theory, technology, the database environment, and the role of database applications in support of enterprise. The focus is the use and design of databases using contemporary technology—relational database technology and SQL. An introduction is provided to database implementation issues and emerging database technology.
