COIT12200 - Software Design & Development

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course develops practical knowledge and skills of the system design, implementation and testing and maintenance phases of the systems development lifecycle (SDLC). Software is constructed to demonstrate understanding of SDLC processes as they relate to layered software systems, that is, systems consisting of presentation, application and data layers.

Pre-requisites: COIT11134 and COIT11237 OR COIT11134 and COIT12167

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Lack of focus on the MVP pattern. All three assessments are based around MVP but the topic is not taught clearly and in-depth.
Recommendation
Add more materials about the theoretical descriptions of MVP in-depth and relevant practical programming exercises and examples.
Action Taken
More materials about MVP have been added with programming exercises.

The unit concepts were a little outdated and this unit uses the old standard toolkit, Java swing.
Recommendation
Revise the unit content and use the recent standard toolkits such as JavaFX for Java programs.

We have taught and used JavaFX now. This is a new generation Java GUI building facility.

MySQL Server is a popular open-source DBMS for application development. Proficiency in MYSQL will enhance students job-ready skills.
Recommendation
Replace JavaDB with MySQL and provide supporting resources to download, install and use.

Need a clearer provision about each student contribution to the final paired project - Assessment Item 3.
Recommendation
We will update the marking criteria related to teamwork part in the final project, which will set a clear provision or clause related to each team member's contribution to the project.

The current textbook emphasises software development theories. Weekly Lecture slides have too many pages.
Recommendation
We are considering reducing the number of lecture slides. The adopted textbook is a classic book in the field of software development but indeed weekly lecture slides have too many pages that need to be reduced.

Feedback
We should add some contents in Week 12 related to security engineering. In Assessment Item 3 (Project), we add the requirement of Authentication.
Recommendation
We are considering adding the Authentication requirement for Assessment Item 3 in the next offering. The study materials or tutorial materials in Week 12 will add SHA1/256 algorithm for encrypting the password that can be stored in a table in a MySQL database.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. apply user interface and software design principles.
  2. develop appropriate documentation for the design, implementation and testing phases of the SDLC.
  3. prepare a detailed design for a layered information system using appropriate design methods.
  4. implement a layered information system.
  5. understand the issues involved in software maintenance and how maintenance activities differ from design and implementation activities.
  6. Use SQL effectively in a range of different design scenarios.
