COIT20270 - App Development for Mobile Platforms

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, students will learn to design and implement a mobile app suitable for use in enterprise. The software development process for mobile platforms will be addressed and particular attention will be paid to the impact that limited computing resources and wireless communication have on the development of secure, reliable and easy to use applications.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students requested a brief overview of Java programming language and discussing its syntax.
Recommendation
Provide a brief overview of object-oriented programming and Java at the start of term so students can refresh their knowledge.
Action Taken
The basics of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Java were discussed in Week 1, and relevant resources have been included in the learning material. This will assist students in revising those fundamental concepts and getting ready for Android app development.

Feedback
Need more clarity about the portfolio assessment.
Recommendation
Providing a video or a document on the unit website explaining how to create portfolios using Portfolium.
Action Taken
In Week 1 and Week 3, we thoroughly covered the process of creating portfolio projects. Additionally, we have provided the 'e-Portfolio help' document as part of the assessment structure to further assist students in their portfolio development.

Feedback
Sometimes using MacinCloud can be hard as it's accessible remotely. While it's a viable solution, students reported connectivity issues at multiple occasions.
Recommendation
Investigate options to replace MacinCloud by local Mac servers and prevent connectivity issues.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Design and implement a mobile application.
  2. Describe the technical challenges faced by mobile application development and explain how these challenges can be addressed.
  3. Determine whether a given business problem would benefit from a mobile web app, a native app or a more traditional solution.
  4. Critically assess the user friendliness of an app and its appeal to the mobile app market.
  5. Examine the impact that mobile computing has had in the past and critcally analyse the effect it is currently having on society.
