General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with postgraduate-level knowledge of creative practice research methods to complement the completion of a creative project being undertaken in postgraduate creative industries, creative arts, and other related courses (including the Masters of Arts (by Research) and the Doctor of Philosophy courses. This unit is comprised of scholarly approaches to understanding research methods that are relevant to creative practice research, and provides you with a postgraduate level of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in creative practice research. This unit is designed to be taken in the early stages of a postgraduate course (the first six months of full time enrollment) to assist in the development of a rigorous understanding of research methodologies as appropriate to the creative and professional arts industries. This unit is suitable for those in creative, arts and professional fields with cognate undergraduate qualifications and/or experience, as well as creative, arts and professional workers already experienced in the field and others, who wish to gain postgraduate knowledge, skills and qualifications in creative practice research.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of, and ability to develop and articulate, a suitable research question for an ongoing creative practice research project in the creative arts and creative industries, or other cognate discipline or professional area, at postgraduate level
  2. Research and apply theories of postgraduate research and research methodologies, with an emphasis on creative practice research
  3. Use written and oral communications skills to interpret and transmit elements of research project design within a creative arts, creative industries or cognate professional industries context
