CRIM12005 - Community Justice Innovation

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Innovation in the justice sector is increasingly sought at community level involving Non Government Organisations (NGOs) and community organisations as well as government agencies. Through this unit you will understand this new environment and the importance of therapeutic jurisprudence and restorative justice as ways of understanding how justice is achieved. You will develop skills in human centred design and systems thinking that will enable you to operate in this inter-agency collaborative environment. Concepts such as social innovation will aid you in becoming a catalyst for change, in developing sustainable solutions to justice problems and participating in the changes the justice sector is undergoing.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student evaluation survey
Feedback
I would rather have the Study Guide somehow in Moodle - maybe a moodle by itself. One tends to forget about it hidden away in the unit introduction.
Recommendation
UC will upload the study guide onto the each module in Moodle.
Action Taken
Each module has each study guide.

Feedback
A more even focus across the community justice practices would be beneficial as it felt very repetitive with ~8 weeks focused on slightly different topics, but the same overarching topic of restorative justice, resulting in the community policing and therapeutic jurisprudence segments feeling rushed.
Recommendation
UC prefers maintaining the current unit structure because restorative justice has more discussion points than therapeutic jurisprudence and community policing because it is more widely practiced. To complement the lack of content on therapeutic jurisprudence and community policing, UC will add more teaching materials to Moodle. The teaching materials will be reviewed as pat of the 5 year review.
Action Taken
The UC maintained the unit structure. However, given the student feedback on the Useful Knowledge, the unit materials will be fine-tuned.

Feedback
Students enjoyed the interactive challenge activities during the live session.
Recommendation
The unit materials will be fine-tuned for the future iteration.

Recommendation
The UC will add more materials to the unit contents for students' further learning.
Action Taken

Feedback
Students were interested in increasing the interactivity of tutorials by dedicating additional time to workshops within the lectures.
Recommendation
The UC will develop a better time management plan.
