ECHO11003 - Fundamentals of Cardiac Science

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides an insight into the science of cardiac assessment by exploring the role and scope of practice of the cardiac physiologist and echocardiographer within the Australian Health Care System. You will acquire knowledge of the types of cardiac assessment techniques available and the outcomes of those assessments. You will apply your knowledge and skills to demonstrate procedures for the provision of safe patient care, ultrasound scanning coordination, spatial awareness and grey-scale pattern recognition in a simulated clinical environment. The aim of this unit is to provide introductory knowledge and skill that will support your learning throughout the Echocardiography / Cardiac Physiology course.

Students must be enrolled in CV69 Bachelor of Echocardiography and Cardiac Physiology / Graduate Diploma of Echocardiography

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Practical Assessment 0%
2. Practical Assessment 0%
3. Written Assessment 40%
4. Examination 60%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student evaluation during residential school
Feedback
Students indicated that they would appreciate more hands-on scanning in residential school and more cardiac anatomy.
Recommendation
Investigate the potential for including more hands-on scanning and more emphasis on cardiac anatomy during the residential school delivery.
Action Taken
The 2023 residential school format was revised to include a wet lab heart dissection and the incorporation of more time to undertake hands-on scanning activities.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Students liked the guided approach to teaching which required active thinking and encouraged individual thought processes.
Recommendation
Delivery will continue with a similar approach to support student knowledge acquisition and foster understanding of concepts.
Action Taken
Tutorial and teaching style remained consistent due to the positive feedback.
Source: SUTE Suvery
Feedback
Some student feedback suggested that the time allowance for the final Online test was insufficient.
Recommendation
Further review of question length and time allocation will commence.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: SUTE Survey
Feedback
Some students felt that their written assessments were evaluated against standards beyond their experience.
Recommendation
An exemplar written submission will be made available with assessment resources. The marking guide will be reviewed to see if improvements can be made to further clarify assessment expectations and more defined grading criteria.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: Residential school feedback
Feedback
Students responded positively to the new residential school format, which incorporated more scanning time and an anatomical wet lab.
Recommendation
The current residential school format with be continued.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Students would appreciate additional feedback on Assessments.
Recommendation
Additional feedback will be provided via zoom and the overall assessment strategy for the unit will be reviewed.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the provision of cardiac assessment within the context of general diagnostic services in the Australian Health Care System
  2. Discuss the role and scope of practice of echocardiographers and cardiac physiologists, including professional and legal frameworks
  3. Apply introductory-level knowledge and skill of cardiac assessment, anatomical planes and patient data using appropriate terminology
  4. Perform clinical tasks which demonstrate safe practice in a simulated environment.
