ECHO12004 - Cardiac Assessment Skills 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit you will acquire knowledge of the key principles and data used to assess the cardiovascular system. This unit prepares you for the clinical workplace through the development of skills in cardiovascular assessment. These will include electrophysiology, cardiac angiography, non-invasive cardiac and respiratory measurements and a variety of cardiac imaging procedures. You will then apply your knowledge to the analysis of the outcomes of that assessment. You are required to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to work in a clinical setting, and will be assessed within a simulated environment. You must pass this unit to be eligible to attend clinical placement in year 2.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
The lecture content was great, and taught in a way that made it easy to learn.
Recommendation
Current lectures will continue to be improved and old lectures replaced in 2021.
Action Taken
Pre-recorded lectures provided within this unit were revised. Lectures which needed contemporary content added were updated and new recordings developed and delivered.

Feedback
I found it quite hard learning two different topics each week.
Recommendation
This is double credit unit making it multi-faceted, therefore different topics are required to be covered to fulfil the unit requirements. Content delivery will continue to be revised and improvements will be implemented where feasible, to improve student experience.
Action Taken
Student learning was supported throughout the term. Contextualised tutorials were provided where clinical cases were discussed. In addition, students were provided updates (via forum posts) and revision material for each week of the term to keep them engaged and ensure the volume of learning over the twelve-week term for this 12-credit point unit was reasonably managed.

Feedback
Tutorials were very specific to important areas and explanations of topics were easy to follow and pick up, however there was a lack of engagement and participation from students.
Recommendation
Weekly tutorials will continue to be delivered to support weekly content. The unit coordinator will continue to look for innovative ways to encourage student engagement in live tutorials.

Frequent reminders were sent out with pre-readings offered to students prior to the tutorial to try to engage students.

Feedback
Students felt supported by the step by step break down in tutorials and the quiz feedback, as they learnt to read and interpret ECG and EGM recordings.
Recommendation
Tutorials will be offered weekly and detailed ECG quiz feedback will remain within the unit.

Feedback obtained from student surveys reported that some lecture recordings contained background noise or low volume levels.

Lecture content will continue to be updated and improved.

Students appreciated the unit coordinator's prompt responses to forum questions.

The use of the Q&A discussion board will continue to be promoted and used to help improve student understanding.
