ECHO13005 - Adult Echocardiography 3

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Echocardiographers perform high level assessments to aid in the diagnosis of complex cardiac pathology and the assessment of acquired, congenital and interventional processes. In this unit you will build upon your knowledge and practice of advanced assessment techniques used in the diagnosis of cardiovascular pathology, including 3-D, strain, speckle tracking, exercise stress testing, contrast echocardiography and transoesophogeal echocardiography (TOE). You will apply the advanced haemodynamic calculations used in these cardiac assessments. You will be introduced to emerging complex cardiac assessment techniques, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA).

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 40%
2. Examination 60%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Verbal during informal consult
Feedback
Image interpretation was useful and helped me with my understanding for the exam.
Recommendation
Students found image interpretation exercises helpful and assisted with exam preparation.
Action Taken
Image interpretation has been useful for students, especially as some may not encounter complex anatomy in clinical placements. The implementation of image interpretation within the unit was continued to help enhance student knowledge in this area.
Source: Student verbal response during informal consult
Feedback
Some students found the online assessment time durations too short, and question navigation difficult.
Recommendation
The online assessment (Quiz and Test) time limits will be reviewed. Tips for navigating Moodle for the online assessments will be highlighted next delivery
Action Taken
Nil.

Feedback
Some students did not find that attending the tutorials to be beneficial.
Recommendation
Tutorials will be updated to include real-world case studies to captivate students' interest and encourage active participation.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the aetiology and related cardiac assessment data of complex cardiac pathologies.
  2. Explain the procedures involved in high level cardiac assessment techniques.
  3. Compare the use of high level cardiac assessment techniques in the diagnosis of complex cardiovascular pathology.
  4. Apply haemodynamic calculations used in complex cardiac assessment.
  5. Evaluate emerging technology and diagnostic parameters in the assessment of complex cardiac pathology.
