ECHO13008 - Advanced Cardiac Assessment Skills

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit you will compare and contrast the methodology and outcomes of several advanced echocardiographic and cardiac catheterisation procedures and alternative cardiac testing modalities including MRI, CT and Nuclear medicine. You will apply this knowledge to a variety of common cardiovascular pathologies frequently first assessed with echocardiography, within the setting of best practice and patient safety. You will evaluate a variety of cardiac assessment data, formulating differential diagnoses and management strategies.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Group Work 40%
2. Online Test 60%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: SUTE
Feedback
Some students found guidance provided under the assessment tile to be insufficient.
Recommendation
The assessment tile within Moodle will be redesigned to include additional guidance in unpacking the assessments. The importance of reviewing the published E unit profile will be highlighted, including where it can be accessed from on the Moodle site.
Action Taken
The assessment tile was redesigned to include additional guidance related to the assessments. A one-on-one tutorial was provided to each group to go through the expectation for the assessment.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Some students struggled to see relevance in unit content.
Recommendation
Tutorials will be further developed to include examples of real-world applications of the topics being taught. Case studies will be implemented to help students with their learning
Action Taken
Real-world examples were included in the tutorials to help students with their learning.
Source: SUITE
Feedback
Some students found generalised assessment feedback not useful.
Recommendation
Opportunity for individual engagement with the unit coordinator through an informal consultation will be promoted.
Action Taken
Informal consultation with the unit coordinator was promoted, however, few students took up the opportunity to engage with the unit coordinator one on one.
Source: Student Unit Evaluation and Self-Reflection
Feedback
Students would like more real-world examples provided.
Recommendation
More real-world examples will be provided to students to help them with their knowledge. Review the effectiveness of the learning materials provided for the unit and incorporate additional real-life examples to enhance students' knowledge development in this unit.
Action Taken
Nil.

Feedback
Provide more useful feedback.
Recommendation
Try to encourage students to engage with the unit coordinator for an informal consult regarding their results. Provide feedback in a different format. This year feedback was provided as a video recording. Students may prefer feedback in a written format.
Action Taken
Nil.
Unit learning Outcomes
