ECHO28005 - Ultrasound Imaging of Congenital Heart Disease

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Cardiac sonographers are required to perform complex assessments to aid in the diagnosis of cardiac pathologies associated with congenital heart disease in both the paediatric and adult populations. In this unit you will study the link between disordered embryological development, congenital heart disease, and corrective interventional procedures. You will build upon your knowledge exploring corrective and palliative interventions and post-operative evaluation of congenital heart disease using advanced cardiovascular assessment techniques including 3-D, strain, contrast, exercise stress testing, echocardiography and trans-oesophageal echocardiography (TOE). You will apply advanced haemodynamic calculations to case studies, guiding cardiac management. You will apply your knowledge to case studies and compare and contrast the choice of procedure within an ethical framework of best practice and patient safety, and hone your team work and social innovation skills through a group assessment on promotion of the public awareness of congenital heart diseases.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Recommendation
Consider getting students to verbally present a case study via Zoom prior to completing a written case study for the assessment task. Feedback from the verbal presentation can be reflected on and actioned by the student for the written submission.

  2. Compare and contrast advanced imaging modalities involved in the assessment of congenital heart disease
  3. Apply haemodynamic calculations used in complex cardiac assessment
  4. Critically evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in congenital heart disease management
  5. Perform diagnostic echocardiographic scans to meet the Competency Standards for the entry level cardiac sonographer.
