EDSE14003 - Literacy and Numeracy across the Curriculum

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Literacy and numeracy shape our everyday lives and are important to all learning in formal education environments, be it in a history, physical education or agriculture class. This unit identifies issues in secondary education related to literacy and numeracy across the curriculum. It provides knowledge and learning opportunities to understand and critically evaluate literacy and numeracy teaching strategies, and to plan for their application in secondary school subjects. It also requires the development and maintenance of personal literacy and numeracy skills together with critically reflective practices in professional learning in this cross curricula area.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback
The main assessment in the middle of the term, followed by 2 x weekly quizzes was revolutionary in my view.
Recommendation
The structure of the unit will be maintained.

Feedback
The unit evaluations went down slightly. I think the evaluations went down slightly because the students did not like the LANTITE questions on the quizzes.
Recommendation
I have made some quiz question changes based on the issues students mentioned. I have also added an in person component to the class in Bundaberg, so I can create activities on how to prepare students for the quizzes better.
