ENAE12002 - Computer Aided Drafting Design (Electrical/Electronic)

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this course students develop skills in computer aided drafting processes relevant to electrical and electronic devices, systems and installations. They discuss common drafting practices, design standards and manufacturers product information needed to prepare project drawings and documentation. They interpret and produce schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, circuit board layouts, logic diagrams, architectural and equipment layouts and component details for electrical and electronic devices. Students explain the roles of design team members and processes used to manage design and project information and documentation. They develop skills required to communicate using electrical/electronic design terminology, plan and work and learn professionally. Distance education students are required to have access to a computer and to make frequent use of the Internet.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Portfolio 100%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Interpret guidelines and engineer’s design notes used to produce project drawings and documentation and discuss common drafting practices and Australian drafting standards.
  2. Research and obtain relevant design standards and manufacturers' product information and specifications and apply this information to prepare project drawings and documentation.
  3. Interpret schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams and circuit board layouts of electrical/electronic devices and systems and convert between schematic drawings and wiring drawings/ circuit board layouts.
  4. Interpret architectural and equipment layouts and component details and parts lists for electrical and electronic systems and devices.
  5. Describe and explain the roles and responsibilities of members of engineering design teams, and procedures for managing project information and documents.
  6. Communicate effectively using electrical/electronic design terminology, symbols and diagrams and professionally document calculations and design solutions.
