ENAG11001 - Engineering Drafting

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course develops the student's visualisation and engineering drawing skills to enable them to create and interpret engineering drawings. Students sketch three-dimensional objects and engineering artefacts, develop hand drawings and interpret drawings that use orthographic projection conventions and sectioning conventions complying with AS1100 Drawing Standards, draw 2D engineering artefacts using computer aided drafting (CAD) software, providing sufficient information to manufacture artefacts. This includes the use of auxiliary views and true shapes of inclined and oblique surfaces. Students also demonstrate an effective, professional level of teamwork and communication and support collaborative learning, and produce drawings and sketches in a professional manner. Distance education (FLEX) students will be required to have access to a computer and to make frequent use of the Internet. Students will need frequent access to a Microsoft Windows computer loaded with appropriate CAD software identified in the Learning Resources.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 20%
2. Written Assessment 20%
3. Written Assessment 15%
4. Written Assessment 30%
5. Written Assessment 15%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Sketch and discuss features of simple three-dimensional objects given engineering drawings or the objects [2, 3, 4, 5]
  2. Produce freehand sketches to visually define artefacts in engineering practice [2, 3, 4, 5]
  3. Develop hand drawings and interpret drawings that use orthographic projection conventions and sectioning conventions complying with AS1100 Drawing Standards [2, 3, 4, 5]
  4. Draw 2-D engineering artefacts using computer aided drafting (CAD) software [2, 3, 4, 5]
  5. Scale, layout, draw and dimension engineering CAD drawings to provide sufficient information to manufacture artefacts [2, 3, 4, 5]
  6. Interpret drawings and produce CAD drawings and that demonstrate the use auxiliary views, and show the true shape of inclined and oblique surfaces [2, 3, 4, 5]
  7. Demonstrate an effective, professional level of teamwork and communication and support collaborative peer group learning [2, 6, 9, 10]
