ENAG11008 - Professional and Sustainable Engineering Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this course, students explore the role of engineers in ethically developing and maintaining sustainable socio-technical systems. They holistically investigate environmental, social, cultural and global impacts arising from use of renewable and non-renewable energy and resources, and review engineering projects to assess their sustainability. Students review professional capabilities expected of engineering associates, evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses and develop personal improvement plans. They research issues, evaluate the quality of the information obtained and prepare reports and presentations to communicate results. Students develop communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills required to function effectively in the engineering workplace and as collaborative learners. Students will be required to attend a compulsory residential school early in Term 1 to promote development of course learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 20%
2. Written Assessment 20%
3. Presentation and Written Assessment 20%
4. Written Assessment 40%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student feedback
Feedback
The residential school needed improved organisation as multiple subjects were covered over the period.
Recommendation
The residential school now only caters for ENAG11008 and is focused on providing students with a thorough introduction to the unit as well as additional skills to assist with the remainder of their course.
Action Taken
The residential school is very focused on the unit and an introduction to the university. It only will be undertaken online, but with a similar focus. Online residential schools have been well received.
Source: Teaching team feedback
Feedback
There were two SPA requirements focusing on teamwork for assignment 4. As the time spent as a team was limited, this seemed excessive.
Recommendation
One SPA to be scheduled to evaluate team performance at the end of assignment 4.
Action Taken
Improved feedback.
Source: Student
Feedback
Students requested marked examples of previous assessments to be provided to assist assessment completion.
Recommendation
Examples should be provided that visually demonstrate how an answer might be planned.
Action Taken
Nil.
