ENEC12008 - Geotechnical Engineering

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit explains why geological processes that produce landforms, geological structures, rocks and soils, affect the location, design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects. In the unit, you will conduct geotechnical tests, analyse test data, prepare geotechnical reports, discuss the engineering characteristics and properties of soil. You will select appropriate approaches for analysing the behaviour of soils in civil engineering applications. You will need to use appropriate "civil engineering language" in context and document the process of modelling and analysis of geotechnical problems. You will present information in a professional manner and communicate, work and learn, both individually and in teams. You will be required to have access to a computer and to make frequent use of the internet, particularly if you are a distance (FLEX) student. Distance students will complete the practical work at a residential school.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

The contents were presented in a manner which made it very easy to learn and understand.
Recommendation
This is a great complement! The contents will be continued to be explained so that the underlying principles are understood by all students.

An overview of a sample exam and recapping of the tutorials will be beneficial.
Recommendation
Although previous exam questions were provided on Moodle, it appears that some students needed solutions for them. For future offerings, previous exam solutions will be provided. An overview of the completed tutorials will also be provided. The lecturer hopes to email/contact students and ask the tutorial problems they would like to revise. Based on this, the specific tutorial problems will be revisited/focused on near the end of the term.

An additional two-hour review class was arranged where exams and tutorials were revised including a discussion of the overall LO's.

The tutorials were very effective and helped learning. The lecturer provided tremendous learning support.
Recommendation
The tutorials were meticulously explained with a comprehensive discussion of the practical variances possible. This key aspect of the tutorials will be maintained in future offerings.

The lecturer will continue to be supportive. The explanations provided will be further enhanced so students find the study of geomaterials interesting and intriguing.

As the lectures are quite long, it will be good to have an overview slide at the beginning.
Recommendation
This is a very good suggestion. The importance and learning outcomes were discussed at the beginning of each lecture. This oral discussion will be accompanied with a slide(s) in future lectures.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the implications of geological factors affecting the location, design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects.
  2. Conduct geotechnical tests, analyse test data and prepare geotechnical reports.
  3. Calculate basic engineering properties of soils and explain the relationship to soil behaviour.
  4. Analyse the behaviour of soil in response to engineering applications using appropriate theories and national standards.
  5. Communicate, work and learn both individually and in teams, document the process of modelling, testing and analysis and present the information in a professional manner.
