ENEC12008 - Geotechnical Engineering

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit explains why geological processes that produce landforms, geological structures, rocks, and soils affect the location, design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering projects. In the unit, you will conduct geotechnical tests, analyse test data, prepare geotechnical reports, and discuss the engineering characteristics and properties of soil. You will select appropriate approaches for analysing the behaviour of soils in civil engineering applications. You will need to use appropriate 'civil engineering language' in context and document the process of modelling and analysis of geotechnical problems. You will present information in a professional manner and communicate, work, and learn, both individually and in teams. You will be required to have access to a computer and to make frequent use of the internet, particularly if you are a distance (FLEX) student. Distance students will complete the practical work at a residential school.

Prerequisites: [ENEG11006 Engineering Statics OR PHYS11184 Engineering Physics A OR ENAG11005 Mechanics] AND [MATH11218 Applied Mathematics OR MATH11160 Technology Mathematics]

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
The labs helped understanding of the content but the report felt too heavy.
Recommendation
Due to several fundamental laboratory tests conducted in this preliminary geotechnical engineering course, some students felt the report was too long. The coordinator will research alternate options and work more hands-on with students so that technical report writing becomes fun and not a burden.
Action Taken
The lab report was converted to a team submission rather than an individual submission. This greatly reduced the workload.

The online test was stress-free with plenty of time provided to understand and effectively answer questions.

This nature of the online test should be maintained in the future.

Feedback
The lectures were very engaging with a lot of content presented but broken down in a manner that was interesting as well as easy to learn. With real-life examples, the lecturer challenged our thinking as well as assessed our understanding on the spot, making sure we all understood the concepts discussed prior to moving on to the next topic.
Recommendation
It is recommended to continue to prioritise the engaged teaching approach to provide students with the best possible learning experience.

The online test questions can be expanded, it felt like a lot of equations discussed in class were not needed.
Recommendation
The role of geotechnical equations in the course should be further reinforced in future offerings.

  3. Calculate basic engineering properties of soils and explain the relationship to soil behaviour
  4. Analyse the behaviour of soil in response to engineering applications using appropriate theories and national standards
  5. Communicate, work and learn both individually and in teams, document the process of modelling, testing, and analysis and present the information in a professional manner.
