ENEE14005 - Capstone Power and Control Design

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Students in this unit will work in a team to analyse, design and prepare documentation for assigned projects in the area of electrical power and control. On satisfactory completion students should be able investigate solution options for an engineering problem in the area of electrical power & control, as well as plan and control project work in a team environment, document their professional decision-making processes; research current art of the discipline, check and evaluate validity of information, and prepare professional documentation for a project Distance Education (Flex) students will be required to attend a residential school to promote development of unit learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

1. Written Assessment 100%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Establish the need for, and the desirable outcomes of, an electrical power and control design project. This will include project Feasibility, Engineering Economics, as well as reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety considerations
  2. Apply sustainability principles and take on-board broad social and human factor perspectives while establishing project requirements and during project evaluation
  3. Prepare a conceptual design after evaluating several project implementation options
  4. Prepare a detailed design for the project, including the selection of the most suitable components, using appropriate computer-based analysis tools.
  5. Prepare project design and documents that conform with the requirements of Australian Standards
  6. Check and evaluate the sourced information; make, defend and maintain records of engineering decisions within a project team environment,
  7. Explain the problem-solving approach used to accomplish project outcomes with reference to problem definition; technical investigation; scoping; development, risk analysis, evaluation and choice of solutions; documentation and presentation of solutions; and verification and validation.
  8. Communicate, work and learn, both individually and in teams, in a professional manner
