ENEG20001 - Australian Engineering Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will be introduced to the roles of professional engineers in the Australian context. You will explore the Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies and the place of the professional engineer in the engineering team. You will see that the engineer's role is to facilitate the integration of technical, business, social, cultural, environmental, economic and political issues that arise within engineering projects and programs. You will apply information literacy skills and information technology skills to engineering projects and present project outcomes. You will work in teams and develop team skills, develop communication skills appropriate for the professional environment, apply risk assessment and workplace health and safety assessment to engineering activities and explore the complex nature of engineering activities and the need to deal with uncertainty and conflicting information. You will prepare a portfolio to demonstrate development of a professional attitude, problem-solving skills, technical knowledge and productive work practices, and provide evidence of a professional capacity to communicate, work and learn productively, both individually and in teams.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

1. Portfolio 100%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2021 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.8 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 81.82% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
The unit really helped students to test and challenge their academic skills. Students were very happy to learn the importance of Academic Integrity that was emphasised during lectures.
Recommendation
This is good feedback and it shall be continued moving forward.
Action Taken
Besides a guest lecturer and other CQU discipline-specific academics, three workshops were taken by an ALC staff. Students engagements were spontaneous.

Feedback
The students would like a little more understanding and emphasis on Australian Standard codes like building and certain civil codes.
Recommendation
This shall be included via a guest lecture by a Civil academic and it may give them a better understanding. Perhaps a workshop session may suit better here.
Action Taken
In consultation with the CQU Civil academic, an industry guest lecturer talked about the different engineering projects in Australia. Also, civil engineering projects were discussed in the classes.

Feedback
One of the aspects students found more confusing at times was about assessment expectations which were not coherent between the Unit Coordinator and tutors.
Recommendation
There were certain sessions where some sessional staff had communicated assessment expectations that were found to be different than the Unit Coordinator. This shall be improved moving forward with a clear set of expectations posted on Moodle for everyone to refer to and be coherent.
Action Taken
To avoid the issue and due to a small number of students' cohort in Term 2, 2021, the unit coordinator was the lecturer, tutor and marker.

Feedback
The unit coordinator did his best for the unit. However, because of COVID-19, there are challenging times for all of the students to receive the best education online.
Recommendation
Hopefully, everything, including all classes and tutorials/workshops will be face-to-face from the next offering.
