General Information

Unit Synopsis

Design of Machine Elements is aimed at integrating and applying prior knowledge in fundamental design, materials sciences, mechanics of materials, statics and dynamics coupled with design strategies and knowledge of machine elements to design various machine components. These skills and knowledge will help you to design, analyse, synthesise and deliver robust engineering solutions. You will acquire strong analytical knowledge of machine elements, their design and load carriage and power transmission mechanics.

Prerequisites: MATH11219 Engineering Mathematics AND (ENEM12009 Structural Mechanics OR ENEM14012 Solid Mechanics and Computational Analysis)

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Some students' lack of sound knowledge in engineering drawing and CAD has made it difficult to process some of the assessment tasks.
This issue has been long recognised and efforts are underway to enlighten the students on AS1100.101-1992. Emphasis on engineering drawing and CAD will be continued in future offerings and ad hoc help will be offered to students found lacking in this area.

Where required, students were guided through this issue with some additional tutorials on ED and CAD.

This is one of the best PBL units offered in the program.

Some students asked for more problems to solved and discussed in the tutorials.
This aspect will be incorporated in the next offering. Special video tutorials are being created to address this deficiency. Several new case studies will also be discussed.

This has been addressed in this year's delivery and is well reflected in students securing higher grades than those of previous deliveries.

Some students lack in basic engineering drawing and CAD skills. This has been adversely affecting their performance in this unit.
A formative design unit with ED and CAD embedded is being developed which will hopefully address this knowledge gap.

Students praised the content and delivery of this unit with special mention for the case studies that are introduced almost every week.
This practice will be continued and as in the norm, more recent and relevant cases are introduced in each offering to help students keep themselves abreast of the latest trends in machine design.
