ENTA12017 - Aircraft Systems - Avionics

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Instruments and systems indications are critical to the safe and efficient operation of an aircraft. In more modern aircraft, control of the data flow into and out of an aircraft, and within an aircraft, has become critically important. This unit covers part of the aircraft aerodynamics, structure and systems module of the EASA Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance basic knowledge requirements syllabus. In this unit, you will develop knowledge of various aircraft instrumentation systems, including systems that use pitot/static air, systems that use gyroscopic principles, and other instruments that measure parameters such as pressure and temperature. You will also learn about integrated modular avionics systems, cabin intercommunication and networking, and other digital information systems. A necessary part of this unit will be conducting practical tasks with different types of procedures, components and systems. This unit is delivered at Aviation Australia campuses by Aviation Australia staff in partnership with CQUniversity.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse the layout, operation and characteristics of aircraft pitot/static and gyroscopic instruments and other system-indicating instruments
  2. Troubleshoot integrated modular avionics systems and the functions of these systems
  3. Compare typical cabin systems for intercommunication within the aircraft and networking services between the aircraft and ground stations
  4. Explain the fundamentals of aircraft information systems and their use in providing flight deck information, passenger cabin information and maintenance information
  5. Reflect on adapting current maintenance practices for future aircraft avionics trends
  6. Work individually and in a team to safely perform practical tasks using tools, hardware, simulation equipment and aircraft components, demonstrating the appropriate application of theory.
