ENTM12005 - Computer Aided Drafting and Design (Mechanical)

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course extends the knowledge and skills developed in Computer Aided Drafting. Students obtain relevant standards, manuals and handbooks, an d research product information relevant to a project, work with engineers design instructions and project data, and apply this information to prepare 3D models, detail and assembly drawings and project and documentation. The course presents methods of detailing tolerances, welds, machining and surface finishes and production of pipe layouts and fluid power schematics. It outlines office procedures for managing project information and documents and roles and responsibilities of members of engineering design teams. Students demonstrate professional teamwork and communication and support collaborative learning. Distance education (FLEX) students are required to have access to a computer capable of running computer aided drafting software, and to make frequent use of the Internet.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Research relevant design standards, product information and specifications and obtain information required to prepare detail drawings and project documentation [2, 3, 4, 10]
  2. Produce 3D models, detail drawings, component and assembly drawings and documentation for engineering projects using common drafting practices, engineers design notes and instructions, product information, Australian and industry standards, handbooks, guides and manuals [1, 2, 3, 5]
  3. Explain the principles of tolerancing, analyse tolerance requirements and apply tolerance details to drawings [2, 3, 4, 5]
  4. Specify and apply welding, machining and surface finish details to drawings [2, 3, 4, 5]
  5. Produce pipe layout and fluid power schematic drawings and documentation [2, 3, 4, 5]
  6. Describe and explain the roles and responsibilities of members of engineering design teams, and procedures for managing project information and documents [2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
