ESSC12001 - Exercise and Sport Physiology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of physiological mechanisms responsible for the body's responses to exercise in physical activity, sport and the workplace. Students will be introduced to standard physiological laboratory and field measures to identify body adaptations to exercise. Students will also develop the necessary skills to design, complete and present a physiological research project. Note: All flexible enrolled students are required to attend a compulsory Exercise and Sport Physiology residential school to promote development of course learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Online Quiz(zes) 20%
2. Online Quiz(zes) 20%
3. Practical Assessment 20%
4. Examination 40%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student and Unit Teaching Evaluation data
Feedback
The relevance of the unit, including the utility of the knowledge and skills covered, is not overly clear to students from all disciplines.
Recommendation
It is recommended that discipline-specific scope of practices, example scenarios, and research findings from exercise and sport science, physiotherapy, and education settings will be incorporated in lectures, practical classes, and assessment questions to strengthen the relevance of the unit to students.
Action Taken
Greater attention was given to translating the lecture content and practical skills during classes beyond exercise and sports settings to physiotherapy and education environments.
Source: Student and Unit Teaching Evaluation feedback
Feedback
The single set of questions within the practice quiz given each week limits the ability of students to undertake multiple practice attempts leading into the actual online quizzes.
Recommendation
It is recommended that additional questions will be included within practice quizzes each week to ensure students can complete multiple practice attempts and receive different questions for each attempt in preparation for the actual online quizzes.
Action Taken
Additional questions were provided in a question bank each week for students to receive unique practice quizzes with multiple attempts in preparing for the actual online quizzes.
Source: Student evaluations
Feedback
Insufficient feedback on progress and performance was provided across the term.
Recommendation
It is recommended that improved methods to deliver feedback on student progress in the unit, as well as performance in assessment items, is incorporated into the unit
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: Head of Course
Feedback
The unit needs to be re-evaluated against updated Exercise and Sports Science Australia standards ahead of the course re-accreditation process in 2024.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit be reviewed against the updated Exercise and Sports Science Australia standards to remain in line with accreditation requirements
Action Taken
Nil.
Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological mechanisms responsible for the body's responses to exercise in physical activity, sport and the workplace.
  2. Locate and review current literature in the area of exercise physiology.
  3. Examine the physiological responses to exercise testing to inform apporpriate health and lifestyle strategies.
  4. Plan and perform safely, ethically, legally, and effectively plan and perform laboratory and field physiological measurements during a variety of exercise situations.
