ESSC13007 - Functional Anatomy

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The development of foundation knowledge and competencies in functional anatomy complements previous anatomy units and provides the cornerstone to manual assessment of musculoskeletal conditions. This unit will provide students with a comprehensive knowledge necessary to identify the structural and functional requirements of the musculoskeletal system in relation to human motion for a variety of activities. The unit will involve a detailed understanding of the anatomy of the limbs and the functional principles underpinning limb movement including an understanding of the performance aspects of muscle, joints and the mechanics of movement. Students involved in various health related disciplines will gain knowledge in manual location and assessment of musculoskeletal structures as they apply to rehabilitation, exercise conditioning and general movement.

Pre-requisite: BMSC11001 Human Body Systems 1 AND BMSC11002 Human Body Systems 2

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Assessment Tasks reflected learning content and were based on real-world scenairos.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Assessment Tasks remain relevant to the content, and continue to be practical in nature to reflect real-world application.
Action Taken
Due to COVID-19 assessment tasks had to be modified but the practical nature was still upheld with students recording and instructing a subject to perform a specific ROM or exercise. This way content still remained relevant, even though there were no hands-on lab sessions.

Some learning content was covered after the Residential School/Assessment Due date.
Recommendation
The timing of the Residential School makes it difficult to cover all content. It is recommended that previous years content (i.e. Lecture recordings) are made available for students at the beginning of Term for their own learning and reflection, prior to the Residential School.
Action Taken
Due to COVID-19, face-to-face teaching was not possible. However, a fully on-line residential school was trialed in 2020 and the assessment that usually took place during the residential school was taken into an online exam during exam week. This was to allow the students time to cover all the content.

Feedback
Needed more support and focused lecture material surrounding physical tasks. Felt very unsupported with regards to palpation and practical tasks, there was not enough lecture time dedicated to these skills.
Recommendation
It is recommended to provide more focussed content in lab sessions and step-by-step video resources to assist students in palpation, range of motion and exercise tasks.

Feedback
Given the challenges with COVID-19 and the move to put the labs online, I thought this was done well. The use of breakout rooms provided an opportunity for good discussion in small groups which students seemed to embrace. I really enjoyed the labs.
Recommendation
It is recommended to utilise online labs and breakout rooms to complement the face-to-face labs in future delivery of this unit.

Assessment tasks were great
Recommendation
In 2020 alternative assessment tasks were introduced, which still met the learning outcomes of the unit. It is recommended that these alternative tasks are weaved into the unit for delivery in 2021 and beyond.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the structure and function of the musculo-skeletal system in relation to human movement.
  2. Identify and palpate the bones, bony landmarks, ligaments and muscles of the upper and lower limbs.
  3. Analyse the relationship between muscle location and action as it applies to human motion

This unit is designed to encompass both theoretical and practical aspects of functional anatomy. The unit lectures will cover the advanced theoretical knowledge related to the subject matter. The practical laboratory/workshop sessions will then build on the theoretical knowledge gained during the lectures and allow students to gain experience in identifying, locating and assessing muscular actions across a range of movement activities. Assessments for this unit will be based on the development of a muscle portfolio and a practical video demonstration of a muscular assessment of movement. Students will also sit an examination of the theoretical knowledge gained about the musculo-skeletal system. The assessment pieces will allow students to gain a comprehensive knowledge necessary to identify the structural and functional requirements of the musculo-skeletal system
