ESSC13009 - Professional Practice in Exercise and Sports Science

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will enhance your professional development in exercise and sport science by becoming a reflective practitioner. Additionally, you will gain authentic practical exercise delivery via work integrated learning, as well as practically focused assessments, which will allow you to gain the skills that are required of a graduating exercise and sport science professional. This will involve working with primarily healthy populations under the supervision of appropriate health or exercise and sport science practitioners, during which time you will further develop your skills in the development and delivery of exercise and sports science related activities.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Critical incident reflective practice assessment Discussions with students
Feedback
Students discussed the challenges certain situations can pose during work integrated learning such as working with clients that have mental health conditions.
Recommendation
It is recommended that students are better prepared for dealing with situations related to mental health that may occur in an exercise and sport science context. It is recommended to investigate options related to mental health first aid education for these students.
Action Taken
In 2023, free access to the CQU online training module and micro-credential "Mental Health First Aid for Fitness Trainers" was provided for all ESSC13009 students.
Source: Discussions with students Unit and practicum coordinator reflection
Feedback
The paperwork and assessment requirement for evidence of practicum completion, such as log books and record of student engagement, can be burdensome for students and supervisors to complete and appear to have some duplicate information.
Recommendation
It is recommended to review the evidence requirements for practicum completion. It is important when doing so to consider ESSA accreditation as well as CQUniversity guidelines.
Action Taken
Work -integrated learning and practicum processes are continually being reviewed to align with both ESSA and university guidelines.
Source: Student Feedback
Feedback
Students commented that practicum processes and not being able to start on the first day of term can be frustrating for them if they are organised prior to start of term.
Recommendation
It is recommended that practicum processes are continually reviewed and streamlined to enhance student experience. Considerations will need to be made for site availability and suitability.
Action Taken
Nil.
