EVST13015 - Landscape Ecology & Management

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course will cover essential knowledge of landscape features and their management. Students will obtain theoretical understanding of landforms, biogeography, effects of natural and man-made impacts (eg mining) on the sustainability of local ecosystems, erosion control, vegetation surveys, modern techniques of remediation, productive use of degraded land and rehabilitation success criteria. They will gain practical experience through field visits during residential school. Emphasis will be placed on Central Queensland landscapes with a broader understanding of the Australian landscapes. All students are required to attend a Residential School.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
The lecture content was interesting and useful but some of it was slightly dated. The sound and picture clarity of lecture videos should be reviewed, and slides should be updated for currency.
Recommendation
The quality of the current lecture materials should be reviewed/updated by the unit coordinator in 2023. Affected videos should be re-recorded prior to the next offering.

Lecture materials were deemed suitable for the 2023 offering. Unit coordinator should update slides and lecture recordings with more current content.

The residential school was very informative and beneficial to the unit.

A similar format of field-based activities, site tours and talks should be implemented for the 2023 offering.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the biogeography of Central Queensland.
  2. Discuss the impacts of various activities such as tree clearing and mining on the sustainability of local ecosystems.
  3. Conduct land and vegetation surveys, simulate erosion events and describe land remediation techniques.
  4. Analyse techniques used in the remediation of degraded landscapes and discuss those relevant to Central Queensland ecosystems.
  5. Design a protocol for remediation and/or sustainable management of a disturbed landscape.
  6. Assess the criteria used to determine cost effectiveness and success of remediation process.
