HLTH13031 - Population Health Epidemiology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course explores the importance and significance of the national and international health priority areas and environmental issues in the health of populations. The student should be able to use evidence from epidemiological investigations, including statistical data and other health outcomes, in determining the health status of populations. The critical function of epidemiology will be reviewed including areas of anticipated needs, identified risk conditions, definition of priorities and the use of available resources for planning and administering health care services.

Prereq: 24 credit points (any tertiary level courses)

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Revision of alignment of learning outcomes and weighting of assessments.
Recommendation
The alignment of the learning outcomes and weighting of assessment items means that it is possible for students to pass the unit without displaying mastery of some fundamental concepts. This was discussed at length with the Head of Course and the Academic Lead (Learning & Teaching) within the School. A revision of the alignment and weighting of the assessment items will be undertaken and a Unit Change Proposal submitted to take effect from Term 1 2021.
Action Taken
This recommendation was not actioned because the Unit Coordinator left and a new unit coordinator has started coordinating this unit at the start of 2021 T1. The recommendation will be discussed with the Head of Course and further actions will be undertaken in due course.

Revision of materials and assessments.
Recommendation
In addition to the proposed revision of the alignment and weighting of the assessment items in this unit, the unit contents need to change. The current Unit Coordinator concurs with the previous unit coordinator "that it is possible for students to pass the unit without displaying mastery of some fundamental concepts" in epidemiology. A revision of the unit content and alignment with the course outcomes will be undertaken over the 2021 T3 period, to take effect from 2022 T1.

Tutorial
Recommendation
Although tutorials are scheduled, many students do not attend them. It might be useful to offer drop in tutorial sessions so more resources can be directed at helping students online on Moodle and one on one support where needed.
