Dissertation A is the first of two Honours dissertation courses (note: the dissertation is a single document; the enrolment is divided into two courses for ease of administration only). Students should consult their nominated supervisor in the first instance for full details of the requirements for completing an honours dissertation as these will vary according to the discipline being studied. The dissertation will normally be at least 15,000 and no more than 20,000 words. Students will be provided with a clear set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The dissertation will demonstrate an appropriate level of mastery of the various dimensions at honours standard of the chosen discipline. This mastery may be demonstrated with a range of possible outcomes that are recognised and benchmarked in the relevant discipline such as: creative artefact and exegesis; original research and/or performance with critical reflection; critique of primary sources and literature review; Disciplines available - Creative Writing - Digital Media - Geography & Environmental Studies - History - Literary & Cultural Studies - Music - Professional Communication - Sociology The learning outcomes for the dissertation will vary depending on the discipline chosen, and they will be negotiated with and/ or specified by the supervisor and provided to the student no later than one week of the commencement of Term. Full details of course options will be provided on the Program Moodle website. Further information about Honours The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Program combines coursework and dissertation to prepare graduates who have coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as well as practical knowledge of research principles and methods. Graduates will have advanced cognitive skills and be able to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge and be able to identify and provide solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence. The Program is available in the following disciplines: Creative Writing, Digital Media, Geography & Environmental Studies, History, Literary & Cultural Studies, Music, Professional Communication and Sociology. The Honours Program comprises 50% coursework (normally 4 courses) and 50% dissertation. The coursework involves supervised reading courses. Students will consult with an academic in the relevant discipline and negotiate suitable topics. The dissertation typically involves a supervisor, an agreed topic, and the outcome is a dissertation of 15-20,000 words. Details of the specific learning outcomes, set texts and readings, materials and assessment will be negotiated with the supervisor. Please note: Students cannot complete the Honours Program without appropriate supervisors and agreed topics.

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.
