Unit Synopsis

Performance Management is a broad unit which focuses on ways of effectively managing employee performance through performance evaluation and compensation management. Fundamental to this process is a sound understanding of the theoretical formulation of both job analysis and design. An organisation's compensation policies play a major role in its ability to attract and retain skilled and/or experienced employees, to motivate high quality performance, and to support organisational strategic objectives. Performance evaluation or appraisal systems provide one of the major performance control mechanisms in an organisation, as well as impacting on motivation.

Prerequisite: 48 credit points

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students especially appreciated the useful knowledge and skills gained from the unit resources and assessment tasks. The unit received great feedback from students with 100 percent overall satisfaction in last two years and high scores in all criteria. However, the unit and assessment 1 requirements were not clear to some students especially during the earlier weeks.
Recommendation
Keep the assessments, resources and text book updated, contemporary and authentic to the industry and skills. Include an additional video with the welcome message in Moodle at least one week before the term starts to explain the overall unit and assessment requirements.
Action Taken
The contemporary assessment scenarios and the related case studies/news articles were updated for both of the assessments by Lead Unit Coordinator. The assessment guidelines, marking rubric, live assessment briefing, video recordings of the assessment briefing was organised by the caretaker unit coordinator for the students a week before term starts. Also, Moodle navigation video and the unit introduction/welcome message video was uploaded too a week before the term starts.

Feedback
Students appreciated the efforts of the caretaker UC. They mentioned, "UC shows genuine passion for the unit and the learnings of his students. He facilitates lectures in a way that ensures all students are engaged and participating. Also, encourages students to build relationships and work together.
Recommendation
It is critical to bring students back to the online classes to enhance their in-class participation and engagement with the contents. In-class attendance and participation marks should be allocated. Teamwork and activities will be developed to ensure better engagement with the unit. Thus, it would be better to change the assessments (individual essays/reports) to active assessments. It may include in-class live weekly quizzes, and the opportunity to write down reflective notes. Group assessments and presentations will be added to the unit. Students will do certain activities every week during class with their teammates. They will present their knowledge, insights and experience during the class. They will get an opportunity to write down team reflections on their work. Such changes will motivate them to come to the online weekly workshops to gain and discuss knolwedge and skills. In addition, we should continue to engage students using student-centred teaching techniques, and continue to send regular weekly emails, and unit updates using CQU Success. Offer help to the students out of the regular workshop timing if they are struggling to attend workshops.

Feedback
Appreciated the availability of workshop activity sheets in the Moodle. Great help to have workshop activity sheet and it includes opportunity of Assessment briefing, scenario-based discussion questions, and a weekly case study analysis with questions.
Recommendation
Team work and activities will be added to improve collaboration and teamwork. Continue to use weekly workshop activity sheets on Moodle. Also, continue to provide instructions regarding weekly activities during online workshops

Feedback
Students showed concerns (low percentage) on "Knowledge and skills", however the feedback could not relate with positive comments (qualitative data).
Recommendation
We have not made any changes in the unit contents (knowledge and skills) in last the three years. Lecture PowerPoint slides, lecture recordings and the readings will be updated. Some recent industry insights and practical work activities (such as portfolio as an assessment) will be added too. Teams will be formed for team assessments (assessments need to be changed), The weekly team activities will be conducted to ensure the transfer of knowledge, skills, collaboration and teamwork. Also, the guest speaker would be invited to share some recent industry knowledge and skills regarding performance and reward management.
