General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces students to the study of fiction, film and tv by examining the practices associated with reading particular genres such as romance, fantasy and crime. Each genre comes with its own special effects, and at the same time, draws on the generic effects of its medium. Students will explore the importance of popular genres to the understanding of contemporary life, its meanings, values and modes of behaviour. Students will learn to think critically about the way texts are structured around pre-existing codes and conventions and conditioned by the contexts of their production and consumption. An emphasis on generic formulas gives rise to an understanding that the meanings of texts are not naturally given but culturally constructed. These explorations will function as an introduction to more advanced studies in literary and cultural studies.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

The Moodle site was a little unorganised.

Work is underway to make the Moodle site easier to navigate by creating a Learning Activities tab that clarifies the steps to understanding the weekly topic.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Recognise the defining elements of various popular genres and analyse the significance of these elements in particular texts.
  2. Articulate the ways in which popular genres both affirm and subvert the 'norms' of culture, and function as sites of contestation for the meanings, values and ideologies represented within them.
  3. Demonstrate advanced skills in reading, research and textual analysis.
  4. Show increased confidence and competence in written, oral, on-line and group communication skills using the vocabulary of concepts provided by the unit.
