LITR19052 - The Modern Novel

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The Modern Novel introduces students to current and modern twentieth century novels from a wide range of national literatures. The course will take a number of contemporary critical and theoretical approaches. These will include the various formal transformations of the novel through classic realism, modernism and postmodernism as well as its ongoing engagement with issues of the decentred self, gender and sexuality along with issues of race and class.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Marking criteria was not clear/relevant to assessment

Update marking criteria to better match Learning Outcomes and assessments
Action Taken
Unit Coordinator provided live and recorded tutorials on how to complete each assessment and went through the individual marking criteria. Students were encouraged (both within the tutorials and via email) to ask for clarification if it was needed. Explainer videos were also provided.

Some students did not seem to engage with the Weekly Study Guides that have been written specifically to scaffold the assessments.
Recommendation
Provide further links to the Weekly Study Guides in the topic sections (in addition to the assessment pages)
Action Taken
Unit Coordinator showed students how to access the study guides during weekly tutorials and also provided an overview of the study guides during the tutorials. Links were checked to ensure they worked properly.

Selection of novels doesn't represent a diverse selection of topics or writers
Recommendation
Ensure novel selection includes literary talents of a more diverse selection of writers and topics representative of the contemporary era, including women, First Nations, LGBTQIA+.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. discuss the complex picture of the 'modern' western world built up in the novel since circa the early 1900s and articulate the salient aspects of this picture
  2. look at the transformations undergone by the novel in its passage through socio/moral/expressive realism, modernism and post-modernism and discuss these transformations in an academic manner
  3. further develop your analytical and written communication skills.
