This course examines a selection of North American, nineteenth and twentieth century texts (fiction and film) by focusing on North American cultural and critical orthodoxies as well as challenges which have been made to these orthodoxies.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Some students commented on the quantity and selection of set texts.
Recommendation
The course is designed as a survey course which takes students out of their usual sample space. This approach works with most students. However, I will spend more time in the lectures and online explaining why this approach works best in courses of this type.

Student response: "I was really looking forward to this course but the annoying assessment items outweighed how cool the actual course is. The book review article was really confusing. I know how to write a book review...but what is a book review article?"
Recommendation
Detailed instructions and student samples are provided in the course material. This will be highlighted more for the students in future.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. to develop in students the skills to analyse selected North American novels and films of the twentieth century within a framework of issues such as ideology, gender, race and the politics of literature. 
  2. to examine the way various texts and relevant cultural discourses are used in the construction of various American identities and communities, and the attempts that have been made to negotiate these constructions.
  3. to promote an understanding of the complicity between literature and ideology, and of the ways that texts operate as sites of ideological struggle, particularly as exemplified in the set texts.
  4. To foster the following generic skills:
