Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Portfolio 40%
2. Written Assessment 60%
3. Professional Practice Placement 0%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Verbal feedback from students gained on clinical placement site visits as well as personal reflections written in reflective portfolio assessments.
Feedback
The Continuity of Care experiences, although deemed as beneficial by students, have led to perceived workplace/clinical placement fatigue due to the number of appointments and the on call nature of births.
Recommendation
Guidance around reducing workload fatigue to be added to the Moodle page for future Midwifery Practice units as well as providing information to prospective students and industry partners within Midwifery Placement Experience documents. To support industry partners in managing work place fatigue within the clinical placement units. To discuss strategies with students at residential school to reduce workplace fatigue and ensure they are aware of further UC support.
Action Taken
Workload fatigue information is provided on the unit Moodle sites. Comprehensive information about managing COCEs and fatigue is discussed during residential school. Unit coordinators provide consistent weekly scheduled opportunities to converse with students regarding clinical placement concerns. Unit coordinators maintain consistent communication with industry partners regarding clinical placement.
Source: Verbal feedback from following up on the absent clinical document after submission of all other clinical documents.
Feedback
There were a large number of practicum outstanding grades as many students were unaware that they had to complete an additional form for their final term alongside their clinical placement preceptor.
Recommendation
Although emails were sent in the term to remind students to complete this additional form, at subsequent term 1 residential schools this will be explained to students face to face by directing them to the form in their clinical log books. This aims to provide a less stressful experience for students at the end of their final term.
Action Taken
Clear and consistent communication was provided. There were no concerns regarding completion of documents this term.
Source: Anonymous feedback provided to the student representative.
Feedback
Feedback was provided stating that university staff presence seemed more prominent at some sites and was absent at other sites.
Recommendation
Due to resource constraints, it is not possible to regularly attend rural sites which are considerably distant from the locations in which the course staff reside. The midwifery practice unit coordinators decided that moving forward, at the mid-point of each term, the unit coordinator will personally offer each student the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one Zoom meeting at a time that suits them.
Action Taken
Nil.
