Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 20%
2. Group Work 40%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: SUTE and Unit Coordinator
Feedback
There was a large number of assessment elements.
Recommendation
Review the assessment strategy for relevance and also manageability for students and staff.
Action Taken
The assessment strategy was reviewed and a new assessment strategy was created with fewer assessment elements.
Source: SUTE and Unit Coordinator
Feedback
Student expectations were not aligned with the number of lecture videos and visibility of the unit coordinator (UC). Most learning resources were not recorded lectures. Tutorials were not conducted by the UC. These factors may have contributed to students feeling a lack of connection with the unit coordinator.
Recommendation
Consider opportunities that could support student connection with the unit coordinator while also considering methods to support realistic student expectations about team teaching and variety of learning resources.
Action Taken
The unit coordinator delivered all weekly tutorials and half of the team-based learning activities. Students were encouraged to contact the unit coordinator via Moodle or email with any queries and were provided with a timely response.
Source: SUTE and Unit Coordinator
Feedback
Some students didn't recognise that the groupwork was a part of learning, not just an assessment activity.
Recommendation
Look for opportunities to place more focus on what students have learnt from participating in the groupwork, rather than what they produced from the groupwork.
Action Taken
Reflective questions used in the Portfolio assessment templates allowed students to evaluate the effectiveness of their group work within the team-based learning activity sessions.
Source: Unit Coordinator reflection
Feedback
Delivering team-based learning activity sessions allowed students to take responsibility for their learning, reduced student loafing, and improved student morale regarding group work.
Recommendation
Continue with team-based learning activities in future unit iterations.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: SUTE
Feedback
Some students indicated the Portfolio assessment guidance and marking rubric lacked clarity.
Recommendation
Review the Portfolio assessment guidance and marking rubric for clarity in future unit iterations.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: SUTE, Unit Coordinator reflection
Feedback
Some students indicated the Portfolio assessment was a very large and time-consuming assessment task.
Recommendation
Investigate breaking up the Portfolio assessment into multiple submissions throughout the term.
Action Taken
Nil.
